What this calculator is for

This finance calculator helps you explore the balance you could build from a starting amount and regular contributions. Adjust the rate and time to see your savings growth, and how much comes from your own money.

Use this financial calculator to find a future value, the amount to add, a required rate, or the time it takes to reach a goal. You can also explore regular withdrawals and see when your balance would run out. A constant rate is an assumption, not a prediction.

How to use it

  1. Choose the answer you need and enter your starting amount.
  2. Set a rate and a whole number of years. Choose Adding or Taking out, then enter the amount.
  3. Choose start or end of each year. Start includes a contribution today; end waits until the first year is complete.
  4. When finding a rate, time, or contribution, enter your Goal balance. Open the inflation option to see an ending balance in today's dollars.
  5. Use Advanced when your numbers are already expressed per period. The calculator keeps your numbers when you switch modes; it does not convert rates or durations.

How it is calculated

Compound interest applies the same rate to the balance each step. Basic uses one year per step; Advanced uses one period. Each contribution earns interest from the time you add it. Withdrawals are limited to the money available.

The time value of money formula combines the growth of the starting balance with the growth of each contribution. Handheld calculators call these starting value (PV), ending value (FV), payment (PMT), number of periods (N), and interest rate (I/Y). Calculations retain their precision; displayed amounts are rounded.
